The base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI) is the metre which, since 1983, is defined by the General Conference of Weights and Measures (CGPM) as "The length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299 792 458 of a second". However, NSCL maintains a set of gauge blocks grade (00) as the reference measurement standards of length for Syria and for the dissemination of the unit of length. NSCL can provide calibration services for a wide range of dimensional standards and measuring instruments such as Gauge blocks, Glass & metal scales, Plug gauges, Ring gauges, Thread gauges, Angle standards (polygons, angle gauges, inclinable or rotary tables, sine bars), Angle measuring instrument (protractors, precision levels, …, etc), Surface plates, measuring instrument (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, …, etc).
Expanded uncertainty (k=2) | Range | Measured quantity/Calibrated item |
(0.1+L/1000) µm | 0.5 ~ 1000 mm | Gauge blocks |
0.002 mm | 100 ~ 2000 mm | Glass scales |
0.05 mm | 100 ~ 2000 mm | Metal scales |
3 Sec | to 180° | Angle gauges |
3 Sec | to 360º | Polygon |
0.0005 ~ 0.005 mm | to 500 mm | Plug gauges |
0.0005 ~ 0.005 mm | 1 ~ 250 mm | Ring gauges |
NSCL also performs studies related to surface texture and carries out other precision measurements, such as roundness and roughness measurements.
